RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr Smith's current research interests include computational determinations of the electronic and structural properties of nanostructures, including surfaces and small clusters of metals and semiconductors. Other such ab-initio work includes simulation of photo-electron Fermi surface determination and photo-electron diffraction.
He has a long standing interest in the reflection of electrons from periodic media, especially at high and very low incident energy with recent applications to Low Energy Electron Microscopy. This has continued into studies of the nature of both the elastic and inelastic potential experienced by reflection electrons as problems within many body theory. Extensions of theoretical approaches to the reflection - diffraction problem have been made into other wave forms.
